PVDC Films
KREHALON PVDC films are monolayer shrinkable films extruded using polyvinylidenechloride (PVDC) resin. Krehalon PVDC films offer exceptional barrier properties against moisture loss, oxygen penetration and ultra violet (UV) light discolouration.
KREHALON PVDC films are used throughout the world for the processing and packaging of food products. Applications are for both chilled or sterilized meat, cheese, pet food or poultry products.
Alternatively KREHALON PVDC films are used as wrapping for cheese, bakery, confectionery or meat products. All these industries benefit from the exceptional barrier and therefore shelf life gained by the use of the unique PVDC material.
Single wound (SW) films
Available types
CB-12 is the code reference for all KREHALON SW PVDC films.
All are designed for a tack heat seal. Two special types for increased cling are identified with an additional code letter as follows:
| Film type | Cling properties |
|---|---|
| CB-12 | Nil |
| CB-12S | Minimal |
| CB-12C | High |
Available widths
KREHALON SW PVDC film can be slit in rolls of any width from 60mm to 900mm in 2.5mm increments.
Standard thicknesses
Film thickness is measured in gauge (100 gauge equals 25.4 microns). Thickness availability depends on film type, application and wrapping method. Not all films are available in every thickness.
Most common thicknesses are:
| Gauge | Wrapping method | Approx. thickness |
|---|---|---|
| 40 and 50 | Hand | 10 and 13 microns |
| 60, 75 and 100 | Machine 15 | 19 and 25 microns |
Colours
KREHALON SW PVDC films are available clear as well as pink and red. Other colours can be made available, subject to minimum quantities.
Double wound (DW) films
Available types
EDG-7 is the code reference for all KREHALON PVDC DW films. This code is then supplemented by a further letter, which indicates different formulations for different cling and sealing properties as shown below.
| Film type | Cling properties | Sealing types |
|---|---|---|
| EDG-7 | Nil | HF sealing |
| EDG-7C | High | Tack heat sealing |
| EDG-7D | Nil | HF sealing |
| EDG-7E | Nil | HF sealing |
| EDG-7M | Minimal | Tack heat sealing |
Available widths
KREHALON DW PVDC film can be slit in rolls of any width from 60mm to 900mm in 2.5mm increments.
Standard thicknesses
Film thickness is measured in gauge (100 gauge equals 25.4 micron). Thickness availability depends on film type, application etc. Not all films are available in every thickness.
Most common thicknesses are:
| Gauge | Total thickness in gauge | Total thickness in microns (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 x 75 | 150 | 38 |
| 2 x 85 | 170 | 43 |
| 2 x 100 | 200 | 51 |
Colours
KREHALON DW PVDC films are available clear, and depending on type, in several colours as follows: white, black, amber, yellow, pink, gold and three shades of red.
CONVERTING OF PVDC FILMS
Printing
Flexographic printing in up to 6 colours is available. Only surface printing is available for SW films.
DW films can be printed between the two layers (sandwich print). Sandwich printing, which gives the inks extra lustre, avoids the risk of scuffing in use.
Centre seaming
KREHALON DW PVDC films can also be sealed into tubing by KREHALON in our factories. Please consult your KREHALON supplier for further details.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Storage
The ideal storage temperature is 20-25°C with an ideal R.H. of 50-60%. Temperature should not exceed 30°C. Avoid direct sunlight and contact with radiators and heating pipes. Boxes of converted KREHALON PVDC films should not be stacked higher than 7 boxes.
Technical support
Our technical support team advise customers on suitable structures for each customer application. We also combine film structures to ensure maximum sealability and pack integrity.
